KiwiRail Fined $63,000 for Signal Breach Incident
KiwiRail has been fined $63,000 after the Te Huia train from Hamilton to Auckland failed to obey a red signal, risking collision with another passenger train in 2023.
The train, carrying 94 passengers, passed a red light and damaged a set of points, stopping in an area where an oncoming train could have collided.Following the incident, Te Huia was banned from central Auckland for two weeks. KiwiRail pleaded guilty to not providing appropriate training.
They have since improved training and implemented an Electronic Train Protection system. NZTA welcomed the court’s sentence, saying the importance of staff training for safety.
