Titanic Tragedy: Māori Newspaper’s Heart-Wrenching 1912 Account of the Catastrophe
Wātea Digital takes a journey back in time to uncover some of the best-written te reo Māori news stories from the past. Here are quick overviews of notable articles detailing the tragic sinking of the Titanic (Taitaniki/Titaniki), as published in Māori newspapers.

Te Puke ki Hikurangi – March 15, 1912
In a historic article titled “Te Rongo o Muri,” the Māori newspaper Te Puke ki Hikurangi provided a detailed account of the Titanic disaster.
The article highlighted the significant loss of life, with 2,700 passengers on board, predominantly women. Only 650 people survived, rescued by the ship Wetinia, which was 170 miles away when it received the distress signal.
The Titanic sank to a depth of two miles, with an estimated £2,000,000 worth of diamonds, pearls, and other valuables on board. The article also mentioned the emotional response from the New Zealand government and its people, expressing deep sorrow for the loss experienced by their friends in England and America.

Titanic
Another article, “Te Mate ki te Moana,” reported that 1,500 people perished in the Titanic disaster. A telegram from London confirmed the sinking off the coast of Newfoundland. Of the 2,330 people on board, only 675 survived. The ship, en route from Southampton to New York, struck an iceberg on the evening of April 14. The Titanic, the largest ship of its time, was valued at £1,250,000, with its cargo insured for £2,350,000.
Memorial Voyage – July 31, 1913
A poignant follow-up article detailed a memorial voyage by the ship Franeonia to the site of the Titanic’s sinking. The children of W. T. Stead, a notable victim, cast flowers into the sea in his memory. The hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” played by the Titanic’s band as it sank, was also performed during the memorial, bringing many to tears.
