Teachers’ Union Calls for Major Support Increase for Children with Disabilities
A teachers’ union demands a $2.5 billion boost in funding for children with disabilities, including $1 billion to ensure every classroom has a teacher aide.
The Educational Institute, NZEI Te Riu Roa, believes this funding will create inclusive schools and early learning programs. Their report estimates that by 2029, these changes could add $788 million to the annual education budget.
The plan also includes hiring over 11,000 teacher aides and 1,100 learning support coordinators and doubling the number of early intervention specialists.
Conor Fraser, a speech-language therapist, stresses that supporting these students is crucial for teachers and principals.
