Rotorua Council Advances Tarawera Sewerage Plan
Rotorua Lakes Council is pushing ahead with the Tarawera Sewerage Scheme after the Environment Court dismissed challenges against it.
The Court said the council made extensive efforts between 2020 and 2023 to engage with iwi and mana whenua and address concerns.
Rotorua Lakes Chief Executive Andrew Moraes says councillors must balance all community views while making the best decisions.
“A number of Māori landowners and Land Trust saying, Look, get on with it. Get on with it as quickly and cheaply as possible, so that Tūhourangi can go back to their traditional areas following the eruption of Mount Tarawera,” says Moraes.
Moraes assures the pipeline follows the safest cultural route, running alongside the main road without affecting the lakes.
