Māori Exporters Urged to Stay Patient Amid Tariff Changes
Federation of Māori Authorities chair Traci Houpapa urges Māori exporters to stay patient as global tariff changes unfold.
The U.S. has announced a 10% tariff on New Zealand exports, but Trade Minister Todd McClay says details on how it will be applied are unclear.
Houpapa says the next 72 hours are crucial to gauge the global response and advises Māori businesses to lean on existing trade agreements like the CPTPP.
“So there are other trade arrangements in place, that in FOMA’s opinion, you will see, start to rise, strengthen and will become an alternative market in trading regime then the US is providing,” says Houpapa.
With one-third of Māori jobs tied to primary exports, she reassures that New Zealand’s diverse economy can withstand the impact.
