Māori Strengthen Pandemic Preparedness, Says Whaanga
Deputy Director General of Māori Health John Whaanga says Māori are now better prepared and involved for future pandemics.
On 23 March 2020, New Zealand entered full lockdown, with Auckland and Northland facing extended restrictions.
Whaanga says key lessons came from the innovative and self-reliant Māori response during COVID-19.
“We need to make sure we learn from those things and factor those into any future response. The sobering thing is, it’s not a case of if Dale, it’s mostly a case of when,” says Whaanga.
Whaanga says a pandemic plan was updated in 2024, and a new strategic framework is being developed to strengthen government preparedness.
