Potential Māori Seat Lost Due to Census Count Cut-Off Date
The Representation Commission explains how Māori voters lost an extra seat because of a legislative cut-off date set before a major enrolment surge.
Proposed boundary changes released Tuesday show the North Island losing a general seat, while Ikaroa-Rāwhiti expands into Te Tai Tonga due to population decline.
Māori roll numbers spiked after last year’s hīkoi against the Treaty Principles Bill, but the increase came too late to affect the 2026 election.
Māori electorate rep Grace Smit says a new Māori seat is possible in 2029 after the next census.
“At that point in time, we will look at the number of Māori who are registered on the Māori role, and we will look at the census data, and that may very well result in an increase in the number of Māori seats,” says
