Representation Commission Announces Māori Seat Boundary Changes
The Representation Commission has announced potential boundary changes affecting Māori seats and Māori-populated areas.
Ikaroa-Rāwhiti has been extended into Lower Hutt, previously part of Te Tai Tonga, due to a population drop of 3,000.
In West Auckland, seats like New Lynn, Kelston, and Te Atatū have been adjusted and renamed to match the area’s population growth. They are now called Waitākere, Glendene, and Rānui.
In Southeast Auckland, Panmure-Ōtāhuhu’s boundaries have shifted further south and are now named Ōtāhuhu.
In South Auckland, Māngere gained 2,800 voters from Manurewa, including Papatoetoe. Manurewa, in turn, picks up Wattle Downs and Māhia from the Takanini seat.
These changes are now open for public submissions and hearings, with final boundaries set for release in August. The new boundaries will apply to the 2026 elections.
