Seven Face Assault Charges After Protest
Seven people faced assault charges in the Waitākere District Court today related to a protest during last month’s Pride Festival.
The group, linked to Destiny Church, is accused of disrupting a children’s event at the Te Atatū Library on February 15.
The youngest defendant is 19 years old.
Supporters were not allowed in the courtroom.
The defence lawyer, Bridget Lawler, requested name suppression for safety reasons, but the magistrate denied it for six defendants, granting it for one due to their age.
None of the defendants entered a plea and have been released on bail until early April.
They must stay 100 meters away from the Te Atatū Community Centre and cannot contact the complainants.
The case continues to attract attention.
