Auckland Police School can boosts recruitment
A former Deputy Police Commissioner says a new cop school in Auckland is an exciting opportunity to train more officers.
Associate Minister for Police Casey Costello announces plans for a new training base in Auckland to recruit and train quality officers, supplementing the Police College in Porirua.
Wally Haumaha says Police training has been centralized in Porirua since 1982, with only brief exceptions, such as a 2018 intake of 20 recruits in Auckland.
With the government aiming to add 500 more officers, he says an Auckland facility could make recruitment easier for local candidates.
“To be away from your family for 20 weeks in Wellington is a huge sacrifice and a huge commitment. And so I think, giving them the option to, they can still go to Wellington, but giving them the option to work from their home, be with their families every day, I think this is a good thing,” says Haumaha.
The National and New Zealand First coalition agreement includes a commitment to increasing frontline police by no less than 500 officers, with $191 million allocated in last year’s Budget for recruitment and training.
