Taranaki Maunga Bill finalised in Parliament
Today, Taranaki whānui and the Government will finalise the Te Pire Whakatupua mō Te Kāhui Tupua / Taranaki Maunga Collective Redress Bill.
Busloads of people have travelled to Wellington for the passing of the second and third readings of the bill, which will formalise a co-governance board, Te Tōpuni Kōkārangi, to care for the tūpuna maunga.
Taranaki Mounga Chair Jamie Tuuta says their aspiration for the board is to appoint people who understand the maunga and its values.
“All in all Dale, our focus is putting these arrangements into place and actually showing our own people, first and foremost, and then the wider community, about what’s possible with these arrangements in terms of improving the health and well-being of our maunga, but also through relationship that our people can have back with the maunga, which has been severed as a consequence of confiscation and other things for a long period of time,” says Tuuta.
This process has taken nearly 18 months, with the deed’s initial signing in Te Hāwera in September 2023.
