Oranga Tamariki denies second bootcamp plan
Oranga Tamariki has quashed rumours that it is setting up a second military-style academy with the support of Ngāpuhi.
Currently, since the pilot of ten participants began in July and the residential portion ended in October, one participant has died during the community integration stage, and three have allegedly reoffended.
OT Deputy Chief Executive Māori Partnerships and Communities, Darrin Haimona, says while there are no plans to replicate the Hawke’s Bay military-style boot camp, a collection of service providers from Ngāpuhi is putting together a proposal for a step-down programme.
“They’re running a series of programs now, including drug rehabilitation, and other programs like Māhuru and Ngāpuhi. So they see collectively, for Te Tai Tokerau, they would like to step down of any of their young people that come out of residencies or come out of MSA. They would like to set up the next step program as part of the moving them back into home and the community,” says Haimona.
An audit report on the success or failure of the current boot camp based in Hawke’s Bay is yet to be released.
