Māori law expert criticizes Government’s anti-Māori policies
Māori law and Treaty expert Carwyn Jones says the current government is one of the most anti-Māori, anti-Tiriti administrations Aotearoa has seen in a long time.
This morning, Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka told Waatea he rejects claims that Māori-Crown relations are at an all-time low, though he acknowledges significant challenges in housing, health, and education, where Māori are disproportionately affected.
Jones, who lectures on Māori law and philosophy at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, says the disestablishment of Te Aka Whai Ora—The Māori Health Authority—without a replacement and its reintegration into general health practices is counterintuitive.
“So they were essentially accepting the status quo of those disparities in Māori health and in a range of a whole lot of other areas. So I certainly don’t agree with the minister on you on that,” says Jones.
