Donor gifts Treaty books to schools
Hundreds of copies of the book Understanding Te Tiriti—worth about twenty-five dollars each—are being sent out this week to high schools across the country, free of charge.
This initiative is thanks to a chance encounter and a very generous Pākehā donor, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Author Roimata Smail (Ngāti Maniapoto, Tainui, English, Scottish, and Irish) says it all came about after she gave a book presentation to a small gathering at a Ponsonby bookshop.
“I signed a few books and had some cheese and crackers – and then one of the people went home and read it. And emailed me a few days later, saying this is so easy to understand. I want to let other people know about it. Can I help you send one copy to every high school in New Zealand?,” says Smail.
Roimata Smail, who is also a Waitangi Tribunal lawyer and Treaty educator, says she hopes students will inspire their parents to buy their own copies of the 30-page book.
