Wāhine toa shine at Māori Sports Awards
An all-female group of Olympic gold medallists will vie for the supreme title—the Albie Pryor Memorial Māori Sports Person of the Year—at this year’s Māori Sports Awards.
The finalists include Ellesse Andrews (Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe), Dame Lisa Carrington (Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Ngāti Porou), canoe sprint gold medallist Olivia Brett (Ngāpuhi), and the members of the Black Ferns Sevens team.
Awards spokesperson Dick Garratt (Ngāi Tūhoe) says that with 10 Māori sportswomen winning Olympic gold, this year’s event will be the year of wāhine toa.
“We’ve got an illustrious line-up of nominees again. And especially our wāhine toa. You know the senior women, there could’ve been any of almost 16 go through to the finalists,” says Garratt.
The Māori Sports Awards will be held in Mount Maunganui this weekend.
