Mike Smith criticizes Government climate inaction
Māori climate activist Mike Smith says it is shameful how the coalition government quietly introduced its Climate Change Response Bill to Parliament on Friday, which will exempt the agriculture sector, once again, from paying for their greenhouse emissions.
The government campaigned on the issue, so it’s no surprise, but Mike Smith says it knows it’s wrong and that farming—especially dairy farming—is a major greenhouse gas emitter.
“I’d call that criminally negligent you know. The Agricultural Sector makes up nearly half of our emissions, and we’re in the midst of a climate emergency. And to think that our government would be so irresponsible not to address the emissions at the source,” says Smith.
Mike Smith says instead, the government has chosen to set up yet another committee to once more “investigate” the issue.
