Kuini Ngawai strengthens ties with Te Aupōuri
Te Aupōuri Rūnanga Chair Tipene Kapa-Kingi says strengthening the connections between Te Arikinui Kuini Ngawai hono i te po Potatau Te Wherowhero VIII, and the Kīngitanga with Te Aupōuri is his goal.
Starting today, Kuini Ngāwai is visiting Te Hiku o Te Ika on a three-day haerenga, wrapping up on Saturday with the opening of the new waharoa at Waimanoni Marae, north of Awanui.
Kapa-Kingi says the main reason Te Aupōuri called for the haerenga was to bring the kawe mate of Kingi Tūheitia, whose father, Whatumoana Paki, has whakapapa to Te Kao.
“He’s a Brown. He’s a Brown from Tangoake, from Te Kao, through his mother, Paranihi Paraone. But then also on top of that, to welcome now we get to into her new position as a leader for the Kingitanga movement,” says Kapa-Kingi.
Later this afternoon, Kuini Ngāwai will visit the rangatira of the rohe at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rangi Āniwaniwa.
