Murihiku Expo focuses on energy future
The Murihiku Regeneration Energy, Innovation, and Opportunities Expo is wrapping up in Invercargill today, bringing together local, national, and international experts to discuss challenges and opportunities in the energy sector for the rohe.
Key topics include climate adaptation, Murihiku’s role in an oceans policy, and the importance of partnerships, with insights from the recent Ngāi Tahu Hui-ā-Iwi over the weekend also influencing the kōrero.
Ngāi Tahu rūnanga kaiwhakahaere Justin Tipa says the expo is an opportunity to build relationships with other major companies to collaborate on energy projects that benefit not only Te Waipounamu whānau but also Aotearoa New Zealand’s wider economy.
“Where there’s an alignment of values and trusted relationships, Ngai Tahu is very open to partnering. And down here, the population, Te Waipounamu is pretty big, it just makes sense to partner with those people who share our values. So now we’re all for it,” says Tipa.
Justin Tipa says a significant project on Ngāi Tahu’s horizon is the Fast Track-enabled Hananui Aquaculture Farm, an open-ocean salmon marine farm.
