Manurewa MP: Redundancies worry local whānau
Manurewa MP Arena Williams says her electorate is feeling anxious and disconnected from government parliamentarians.
This week, Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand announced that 47% of their entire Data and Digital group and 24% of their National Public Health Service will be made redundant within the next two to three months.
Parliamentarians are currently on a two-week break from the House.
During this time, Williams has been recently door knocking around her electorate.
The Labour MP is hearing stories from whānau who feel uneasy in the current economic climate, with redundancies occurring all around.
“It’s feeling like we’re back in this flux in the community, and that should get politicians worried, because it leads to social cohesion breaking down. It leads to more anti-social behavior and trouble in our communities. And you know, that is the real politics of the day,” says Williams.
