New unit must protect tamariki rights
Chief Children’s Commissioner Claire Achmad says the Child Protection Investigation Unit is a step in the right direction and will advocate for tamariki to never be harmed in state care.
Over the weekend, the Minister for Children announced the new unit to oversee Oranga Tamariki agencies and enhance the welfare and safety of children in care.
Achmad says the unit provides oversight of Oranga Tamariki’s handling of abuse cases, both in operations and within the system, though ideally, it shouldn’t be necessary.
She says she wants to ensure survivors and tamariki who have been in state care are heard during these establishment stages.
“So I will be looking to amplify those views through the establishment of this unit. So I think that I’m keen to understand more detail here. I know that that detail is going to be forthcoming, and I look forward to advocating to ensure that we have a state care system where every mokopuna is safe,” says Achmad.
