Iwi boards drive Māori health progress
Health Minister Shane Reti says a highlight of his 2024 has been the continued progression of iwi partnership boards.
Earlier this year, when the government disestablished Te Aka Whai Ora, Reti made it clear that iwi partnership boards would serve as the avenue to address Māori health issues.`
He says the iwi partnership boards have highlighted multiple health issues, rohe by rohe, allowing Te Whatu Ora to focus on resolving these challenges for Māori health.
“They would include needs around rheumatic fever, around dental care, around cardiovascular around respiratory, these local needs that the local iwi Māori partnership boards have brought forward for where they want the health system to particularly turn their attention. And that means that’s exactly what we can do. We’re able to point the health system towards those needs,” says Reti.
Shane Reti says dentistry programs, such as newly established mobile clinics and toothbrush and toothpaste campaigns, exemplify how the issues identified by the iwi partnership boards are being addressed by Te Whatu Ora.
