Rotorua festival showcases Māori film excellence
The Rotorua Indigenous Film Festival was held over the weekend, showcasing some of the best in Māori and indigenous film during the event.
Sponsored by the Steambox Collective—which includes well-known local Māori figures in film and television such as Mike Jonathan, Richard Curtis, Tihini Grant, and Tim Worrall—the festival also provided significant funding for new projects.
Tim Worrall says this included $20,000 in film funding and $20,000 worth of post-production support, offering valuable opportunities for newcomers to the industry.
“It gives them a chance to rub shoulders… There’s a real emphasis in our festival on social time. So that there’s time to go and introduce yourself – maybe sit down in a corner and get some advice, make some contacts,” says Worrall.
Tim Worrall says the festival aims to grow the Māori film industry in the Bay of Plenty region.
