New limits on online casinos welcomed
New Zealand’s plan to limit online casino operator licenses to 15, as part of a regulatory overhaul aimed at curbing the sector’s rapid growth, is being welcomed by Māori health advocates.
However, some are sceptical that new rules around age verification systems and prohibiting ads targeting tamariki will be effective.
Cath Healy, General Manager at Hawke’s Bay Gambling Services organisation – Te Rangihaeata Oranga Trust – says fines of up to $5 million sound promising but are only effective if enforcement is consistent.
“But I’m sceptical around the protective measures that will be put in place for everybody. And in particular, whānau Māori who are three times more likely to experience harm from all forms of gambling,” says Healy.
Cath Healy says the new rules are set to take effect early next year, and they intend to ensure the government tracks the effectiveness of these systems.
