Trump victory signals shift in US politics
Political commentator Shane Te Pou says a loss of faith among the working class has led to the reelection of Donald Trump and the Republican takeover of Congress.
As votes are still being counted in Nevada and Arizona, Republican candidate Donald Trump has secured 292 electoral votes to Democratic candidate Kamala Harris’ 224.
The Republican Party also holds a majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives.
Te Pou says the results reflect Americans’ primary concerns.
“You know, you could say that this election was about immigration or health kick-off, but at the end of the day, it was about the economy and inflation. The United States is a very complex place. We had a very important state like Michigan, and traditionally, although they’re socially conservative, they’ve supported the Democratic Party, but they abandoned them yesterday, that’s for sure,” says Te Pou.
Shane Te Pou says these results could make it more difficult for Māori food producers to export their kai to the United States, as Trump has promised to raise trade tariffs.
