NZDF monitoring HMNZS Manawanui for fuel extraction
A New Zealand Defence Force Commodore says they’re closely monitoring the HMNZS Manawanui and nearby areas, preparing for fuel extraction.
The ship has been aground for a month off Upolo, Samoa, after hitting a reef during a hydrographic survey.
All 75 crew members safely abandoned the ship.
Commodore Andrew Brown says the Samoan government has established a no-fishing zone around the wreck, prioritizing an effective cleanup due to the area’s significance as a food source.
“We are doing everything we can to minimize any possible impacts on the environment following the grounding and you know that includes daily monitoring of the Manawanui itself, surveillance of any fuel sheen, continued surveillance of the beaches and the coastline, and that continues 24/7, and that is our major, major priority,” says Brown.
