New Census 23 data highlights Māori whānau dynamics
Te Kāhui Raraunga has released the first official Māori descent families and households data online as part of the latest Census statistics.
Released yesterday, the data combines responses from the 2023 Census and administrative records from other government agencies to provide insights into the conditions of Māori whānau.
Te Kāhui Raraunga lead technician Kirikowhai Mikaere notes that 53% of Māori live in families with couples and children, indicating a significant shift from previous data.
“Of the whānau that have seven or more, Māori make up quite a considerable proportion of those whānau who do have bigger numbers in their whare. So we still have whānau who are, you know, having lots of tamariki, but we’re starting to see the shape and the size of some of our whānau change,” says Mikaere.
All the new data is available at tewhata.io.
