Non-Māori encouraged to learn about Te Tiriti
An online Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshop is encouraging non-Māori to learn about Te Tiriti ahead of the Treaty Principles Bill being introduced next month.
Last Saturday, with only two days’ notice, ActionStation attracted over 150 attendees to the online seminar aimed at bridging the knowledge gaps New Zealanders have regarding this foundational document.
ActionStation director Kassie Hartendorp says their survey found that 32 percent of New Zealanders feel uninformed about the Treaty, despite 83 percent acknowledging the importance of understanding a country’s history.
David Seymour’s discussion around the Treaty Principles Bill is spreading misinformation, which is not truthful to our society.
Hartendorp says Tangata Tiriti do not support this.
“You know, what I’m seeing out there is that you’re right. tangata Tiriti are not just unfazed by what’s going on. They’re actually disgusted. They’re repulsed. They’re concerned. They’re insulted. They believe their intelligence is being insulted by claiming that Māori have any reason to take anything from them, it doesn’t make any sense to them. So we’re seeing incredible support from our tangata Tiriti and our tauiwi whānau and it’s incredible to be a part of,” says Hartendorp.
