Community efforts halt Ruawai liquor store application
Collective community resilience has resulted in the halt of a new liquor store in Northern Kaipara.
Last week, the Kaipara District Licensing Committee declined the off-license application from Auckland-based Hira Estates for a new liquor store in Ruawai, 30 km south of Dargaville.
George Hammon, one of the locals who opposed the liquor store, says Communities Against Alcohol Harm offered their support at several community hui to discuss the license.
He says he’s forever grateful for their help, describing it as divine intervention.
“I tell you what, I just kept praying every day and saying, ‘Thank you, Lord, thank you for delivering our beautiful town of Ruawai’. And in that prayer time, I realized just how beautiful this town of Ruawai, and every town in our country, in Aotearoa—every town, every soul, God loves,” says Hammon.
