Whanau accepts Crown Observer
The Mayor of Wellington, Tory Whanau, has been told by Local Government Minister Simeon Brown, that a Crown Observer will be appointed to Wellington City Council.
“I welcome his intention to bring in an observer,” she said. The appointment of a Crown Observer comes after the recent failure in a vote to sell the Wellington Airport shares thereby impacting the Council’s ability to implement its long-term plan. The appointment also comes amid mounting pressure for the Mayor to resign, although she has confirmed that won’t happen.
On the failure to get the share sale through the mayor said,
“Us as a collective, we could have done a lot better. It got pretty tense a few weeks ago.”
