Local Government Minister Simeon Brown says a Crown Observer will be appointed to the Wellington City Council in the coming weeks.
Local Government Minister Simeon Brown says a Crown Observer will be appointed to the Wellington City Council in the coming weeks.
The move follows months of council members disagreeing over its long-term plan and a last-minute vote against selling Wellington Airport shares to fund broken infrastructure and pay down debt.
Minister Brown says he took advice from officials at the Department of Internal Affairs.
“Advice provided to me by the Department of Internal Affairs highlights that the council is not utilizing its balance sheet appropriately in order to maintain critical infrastructure like water and that it is failing to manage its insurance risk appropriately,” says Brown.
