Green Party expels MP Darleen Tana
The Green Party membership has voted to expel its former MP, Darleen Tana, from Parliament.
Last week, party delegates endorsed a notice given to the Speaker under the Electoral (Integrity) Act to have Tana removed.
Despite an eleventh-hour appeal from Tana through the courts, the vote went ahead.
Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick explained the step-by-step process.
“After a thorough discussion, we came to the unanimous full conclusion to endorse that legislation by caucus. Following the end of the meeting, myself and Marama wrote to Darlene one final time to resign, but also informing her that we would be writing to the speaker to invoke the legislation. We then wrote to the speaker under the Electoral Integrity Act, and that decision now rests with him,” says Swarbrick.
Tana took the party to court last month, arguing that the Green Party’s disciplinary process was unlawful, unauthorized by the party’s constitution, unreasonable, and unfair.
However, the judge rejected her claims, allowing the Greens to proceed with the Special General Meeting.
