Go Media Stadium’s cultural mural transformation
Go Media Stadium has received a new paint job, with each section honouring the history of the venue.
The East Stand’s tunnel is covered from top to bottom with a multitude of murals that acknowledge the original name of the place, Rarotonga, the NZ Warriors, Auckland’s new A-League soccer team, Auckland FC, the 1990 Commonwealth Games, and the many musicians who have performed there.
Auckland Stadiums director James Parkinson says there was little to no celebration of the whenua and the stadium’s history.
With the help of TOA Architects, they were able to create something culturally richer than originally envisioned.
“It is very much grounded in not only acknowledging the past but also looking to the future as well. So very much reflecting the ethos of kotahitanga, in terms of what has come before and what lies ahead,” says Parkinson..
The new murals will be open to the public on Saturday at Auckland FC’s sold-out first home game against the Brisbane Roar.
