PLANZ concerned over teacher development changes
The educators of our teachers are raising concerns over changes to teacher development, including the removal of te reo Māori training.
In a recent letter to Education Minister Erica Stanford, Professional Learning Aotearoa (PLANZ) highlighted the impact of these changes, noting that critical programs aimed at deepening understanding of te reo Māori, such as Te Ahu o te Reo Māori, are being dismantled.
Kaupapa Māori learning consultant Whare Isaac-Sharland says these changes feel like another instance of the government undermining progress made in the education sector.
“Every three years, if we’re lucky, we’ve got the same group in. If we’re not, we get someone else come in. And what we’ve seen over the last Well, is it nearly a year. It is nearly a year, but particularly since January, is a dismantling of things that we believe and remembering that we are a relatively large organization in terms of professional learning and development. We’ve noticed a dismantling of things that have actually been had really positive outcomes, data that we’ve kept ourselves data that has been shared with the Ministry of Education through reports. So we’ve kept that really robust data about the changes that we’ve seen in schools by having something like cultural capabilities,” says Isaac-Sharland.
