Judge rules, boy stays immersed
A Family Court ruling has determined, a young boy will remain at his current kura kaupapa rather than transitioning to a mainstream secondary school.
Last week, Judge David Burns made this ruling in Family Court during a dispute between parents over where their child should attend high school.
The father wishes for the boy to attend a mainstream secondary school for better academic opportunities, while the mother wants him to remain in a kura kaupapa to maintain his fluency in Māori.
In his concluding remarks, Judge Burns noted that the child’s first language is Māori, making the transition to a larger mainstream school, where English is the primary language, difficult at this time.
He will remain in the Māori immersion school until he is 15, with the expectation that when his English reaches a higher level, he can transition to a mainstream school later on.
