Te Pāti Māori challenges Government’s Fast-Track housing projects
Te Pāti Māori remains critical of the coalition government’s fast-track proposal, despite some iwi and hapū initiatives receiving approval.
Of the 149 fast-track projects announced by Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop last Sunday, one includes a Tainui Group Holdings Limited residential housing project in Ruakura, East Hamilton.
Also this week, the Government announced it will invest $35 million into another TGH housing project to deliver 100 affordable rental homes at Hopuhopu, Ngāruawāhia.
Te Pāti Māori co-leader Rāwiri Waititi says over 60% of homeless whānau are Māori, and that’s where Te Pāti Māori’s focus lies.
“Now when it comes to fast tracking to build homes, are those homes benefiting Māori communities who are more effective? If the Fast Track is doing that, absolutely we would support that. But if the Fast Track is just supporting housing developments for people to make money at the expense of Māori, then, no, we are not supportive,” says Waititi.
