Te Aupōuri’s six new plumbers build futures
Te Aupōuri is celebrating six new homegrown plumbers who have lofty aspirations.
Last week, the first cohort of the Tupu Plumbing Programme, run by the iwi trust, graduated at a pōwhiri held at Pōtahi Marae in Te Kao.
Te Aupōuri CEO and programme lead, Tipene Kapa-Kingi, says the 24-month earn-as-you-learn programme is designed for Muriwhenua rangatahi seeking mahi within the rohe.
Now that the graduates have earned their trade certifications, they aspire to build on those skills.
“Their aspirations are to stay within the plumbing sector of the construction industry. Some of them are planning to get into other aspects that they found an interest in during the year, such as operating machinery, electrician mahi, etc. So yeah, it’s been a good learning experience for them in terms of where they want to go and where they want to advance their careers,” says Kapa-Kingi.
Tipene Kapa-Kingi says the selection process for the next cohort will begin next week.
