Ron Mark gutted over Manawanui sinking
Former Minister of Defence Ron Mark says he won’t pre-empt what the Court of Inquiry will conclude during its investigation into the sinking of the navy vessel Manawanui.
Over the weekend, the specialist survey ship hit a reef and sank off the southern coast of Upolu, with two people on board hospitalised and others suffering minor injuries.
Mr. Mark, who, as Defence Minister, brought the vessel from Norway in 2018, says he’s devastated to hear of its fate.
He says Rear Admiral Garin Golding has some hard weeks, or maybe even months, ahead of him.
“He will have to convene the court of inquiry. He will clearly take strong advice from his legal advisors. He will clearly try and find a panel of people who are very experienced, who understand the ship, understand how it operates and is able to look into the matter and get the answers they’re looking for,” says Mr Mark.
