Ngāpuhi artists unite for creative summit
A renowned Māori carver says Ngāpuhi artists from far and wide are coming together to share their mātauranga toi among the iwi.
The inaugural Te Toi Mahara summit next week at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds will bring together iwi leaders, ahikā, toi practitioners, and artists to share kōrero and experiences that explore te toi o te mahara—the origin of why and how we creatively express ourselves.
Pena Makoare, who leads the whakairo workshops, says the summit will be more like a hui taumata, following a non-Western model.
“The type of gathering that our ancestors called together te rūnanga, not te rūnanga we love to hate in these modern times, but that substantial talk, which is about reflecting on Matariki, the wānanga of the winter, preparing for the times to come, as we are doing right now in the koanga of spring, and preparing for the road ahead,” he says
Notable speakers at the summit include Ngāhuia Te Awekotuku, Margaret Aull, Raniera McGrath, and many more.
