Diverse Māori responses amid Fast Track project announcements
Minister for Regional Development Shane Jones says responses from Māori to the Fast Track Approvals Bill range from patchy to pragmatic.
This week, 149 projects spanning a variety of industries including renewable energy, infrastructure, aquaculture and mining were announced by Minister for Infrastructure Chris Bishop and Shane Jones
15 iwi-led or partnered projects were among them.
“Kāti Waewae they’re very pragmatic down in Te Tai o Poutini, their housing project has been embraced. There are projects from Te Tai Tokerau pertaining to housing and aqua-farming. And the Ngāi Tahu Salmon Farming that was rejected is now back for consideration.” says Shane Jones.
Minster Jones says he is aware of iwi opposition to certain projects, however, his focus is on getting the economy rolling through these projects and creating jobs.
