Te Teko Celebrates Liquor Store Withdrawal
The Residents Association of the small Bay Of Plenty town of Te Teko, is celebrating the late withdrawal of an application for a new local liquor store licence.
The owner of a local suprette, lunch bar and vape shop, wanted to open a liquor store in another empty shop he also owns – but changed his mind after community and police opposition.
The Tumuaki of nearby Te Kura o Te Teko, Kiri Henry, says local tamariki from several schools often gather at the shopping centre.
“Tamariki have to walk past that particular shop to get to their bus stops. Some of them actually park outside that shop. Um, it was the concern for the students of our kura obviously, but the kura outside of our region secondary schools that have to catch their buses – and be prone to that sort of alcohol promotion,” says Ms Henry.
Kiri Henry says the businessman had intended to close a current liquor store in a nearby but less favourable location – but will probably now keep that one open.
