Removal a smack in the face for teachers
A reo Māori teacher says the removal of Te Ahu o Te Reo funding is a smack in the face for teachers.
Education Minister Erica Stanford is shifting the $30 million pūtea into professional development and resources for the new math curriculum.
Moehau Husband, from Te Pūtahi o Manurewa, says the course allowed teachers from all schooling backgrounds and proficiency levels to strengthen their reo, and it was delivering value for the limited resources put into it.
“They had cohorts every year, but yeah, another smack in the face from a legislation that was changed or passed through this new government. It’s very frustrating,” he says.
Moehau Husband says over 80 per cent of Māori children are in mainstream schools, and the programme helped teachers make those tamariki feel more comfortable about their reo in a mainstream setting.
