Iwi says bad faith a pattern at Kaipara council
Te Uri ō Hau chair Antony Thompson says the Kaipara District Council’s latest move is part of a pattern of bad faith against iwi and whānau.
The council has unilaterally terminated a memorandum of understanding with Te Uri ō Hau Settlement Trust and a mana-enhancing agreement with Te Iwi ō Te Roroa, which were put in place as part of treaty settlements.
Mr Thompson says under Mayor Craig Jepson the council has pushed Māori out of community discussions.
He says the iwi aren’t going away.
“Our main priority is just to push on through to make sure that one, our whānau are looked after, and two, our voice is heard. And it’s a reminder to the council and to the community, we are ratepayers as well. You know, we have a right to have our voices heard, and to make sure that our whānau voices are heard,” Mr Thompson says.
The High Court is yet to release its decision on a challenge by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua against the council’s decision to scrap its Māori ward without consultation.
