Waipareira sports tied to whānau development
A west Auckland Māori social services organisation want to see more sporting champions come from the west – and even if they don’t win gold they’ll be better for trying.
Waipareira chief executive John Tamihere says part of the group’s social contract with its community is to provide support for whānau struggling to raise tamariki, particularly groups like single-parent families.
Sport is one way to approach that, and it’s already supporting people who can be mentors and role models like boxers Mea Motu and Sonny Morini.
Mr Tamihere says the programme will fill a role done in the past by schools.
“We provide free kai. We provide underwrite for all their clothing and then the mothers will see this. Our mothers are the main organisers of most of our things anyway so in terms of where we are hearing over the next 25 years you will start to see Waipareira sports, regardless of the sport, we will be supporting our young people in it,” he says.
