Homeless head for parks as emergency motels close doors
Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency chair Merepeka Raukawa Tait says the homeless may be out of sight and out of mind for some but they haven’t gone away.
The former Rotorua Lakes district councillor says while the Government has cleared out many of the motels in her town being used for emergency accommodation, it has not been able to say where many of the people have gone.
“I suspect they’re couch surfing. Some of them, now it’s summer, have gone out to the lakes and various parks so out of sight, certainly for some, might mean out of mind but the issues are still here within our area,” Ms Raukawa-Tait says.
She says there are a lot of people struggling to find accommodation in Rotorua.
