Wairoa trust restores whānau link to papakianga
Repairs have been completed on 24 homes in Wairoa badly damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle 18 months ago.
The work by three Māori building companies — M K Tipoki Building, Red Antler Building, and Ngāwari Homes — was coordinated by iwi trust Tātau Tātau o Te Wairoa.
Trust chair Leon Symes says whānau were able to stay on temporary housing pods on the land during the repairs, allowing them to stay close to their papakāinga
“Some of these houses are generational houses, houses that have been through the generations, grandparents have lived in them, and so there’s a lot of sentimental attachment to some of these whare and it’s been a great opportunity for us to make sure that continues on into the future by doing all this repair work for them,” he says.
The trust was contracted to fix 18 homes but through efficient management, it extended the project to 24 homes.
