Free Covid tests end
Today is the last day free rapid antigen tests for Covid 19 will be available from chemists.
Public health expert Michael Baker from the University of Otago says the shift to user pays will end up costing those who can least afford it.
He says the tests have been useful for getting people to self-isolate, and a test as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms is also needed for older people or those with underlying health conditions who would benefit from antiviral treatment like Paxlovid.
“I’m very worried that government is no longer going to cover the cost of these – because that obviously creates a huge equity problem. The tests costs five or six dollars a go, and low-income New Zealanders just won’t be able to afford them – so this is really unfair,” Professor Baker says.
Testing kits picked up today could remain effective until May 2027.
