PKW 25.09: Leadership award for Rawinia Higgins
Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori chair Rawinia Higgins has been awarded the Women in Governance Award 2024 in the Māori governance category.
Te Taura Whiri chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui Barr says it’s well-deserved recognition of Dr Higgins’ commitment to the revitalisation of te reo Māori, advocacy for Māori representation in governance, and Māori women’s leadership.
He says doing the research for the application was eye-opening in terms of the breadth of her scholarship and her activities in promoting Māori language and culture across many years and many settings, at home and abroad.
As a chair, she has kept the board on the right side of the governance line.
“From the time she started, she said ‘Bro, do what you’ve got to do. I’ve got your back.’ And every time something has come up she’s been available to discuss with me. She’s used her discretionary powers wisely, but mostly she’s been this kind support for me and the staff and we’ve appreciated that,” Mr Apanui-Barr says.
Federation of Māori Authorities chair Traci Houpapa received a lifetime achievement award for women in governance.
