Growing Up in NZ study wins extension
The research director for the Growing Up in New Zealand longitudinal study says it’s giving valuable insights into how we need to invest in whānau for flourishing Māori futures.
The Government has confirmed funding until February 2028 for the study, which has tracked the lives of over 6,000 young New Zealanders since 2009.
Sarah Jane Paine says nearly a quarter of the participants are Māori.
She says data from the study has helped inform public policy, such as the decision to require smoke alarms in rental properties.
“I think these sorts of studies, they’re creating data and information that is for everyone. This is not a study just for one research team or just for Waipapa Taumata Rau, it’s a study for Aotearoa. And I think it’s a really exciting time for the study. There’s so many interesting, exciting conversations happening right now about the future; about what Aotearoa of the future looks like; about what it takes to create flourishing futures for mokopuna,” she says
