Mr Chapman started one of the first iwi radio stations, Tautoko FM at Mangamuka Bridge, in 1988 and continued to run it until his death aged 70.
Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi says his memory will live on.
“Seeing his face and knowing his commitment and his mahi and his manner on behalf of Te Tai Tokerau, arohanui ki ai e te whānau pani,” she says.
Cyril Chapman was taken on to Mangamuka Marae this morning, and mourners have been asked not to touch the body because he has been naturally embalmed.
