Screen tapere
Hastings-based Māori performing arts school Te Wānanga Whare Tapere O Takitimu has teamed up with screen Industry training experts Share the Knowledge to offer a course to train crew for Aotearoa’s growing screen production industry.
A pilot of Kahurangi Toi Ātea will start at the University of Canterbury next month with up to three weeks of classroom training, after which selected participants will move to paid placements on an upcoming local feature film shooting in the Canterbury region.
The programme is backed by the Toi Mai Workforce Development Council and Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
Toi Mai chief executive Claire Robinson says there is a shortage of workers for production roles in the screen sector and a misalignment between existing vocational training provision and industry needs.
Toi Mai has worked with industry experts to develop a suite of new qualifications, including an introductory micro-credential, now available for training providers to offer, and new screen standards across a range of screen production roles.
